Nature - Vegetation

     Vegetation, Czech Republic

The diversity of terrain and geological composition of the Czech Republic is reflected in the number and great variety of plant species that occur in the Czech Republic. Three thousand vascular and many more non-vascular plant species grow here . The development of flora was interrupted by Quaternary glacial periods with most species migrating or originating here after the last glacier receded. The diverse topography of the Czech Republic creates a similar vertical diversity of flora. The Czech Republic area includes the following ranges:

-  Lowlands with thermophilic flora and advanced agriculture

-  Downs

-  Forest-steppe with deciduous forests

-  Lower mountains with recent spruce monocultures

-  Mountains with beech and spruce

-  Lower Alpine range with dwarf pine cultures

Three types of flora intersect in the Czech Republic: Central European, Pannonian and Carpathian which subdivide into subregions and districts.

    Vegetation, Vsetín region

Figure shows the vertical diversity of trees in Vsetín region that still cover 71% of the area.

Vertical diversity of trees in Vsetín

In lower places beeches and remains of rustic hornbeam forests with birches, elms and limes occur. In places this species composition has changed due to the planting of spruce monocultures. In high places there are the remains of original spruce growth as well as mixed forest of firs, beeches, sycamore maple and ashes.

The National Nature Reserves (NNR) at Mionší, Salajka and Razula were established for the protection of the remains of original Carpathian spruce-and-fir forests. Climax spruce forests are preserved in the NNRs Mazák and Kněhyně-Čertův mlýn.
